Available now: A belt that reduces emissions and saves costs

Belt starter generators (BSGs) are real money savers: Vehicles equipped with BSGs save up to 15% fuel and the corresponding CO2 emissions. One part of the BSGs really has to work hard: the belt. Up to now, our BSG high performance belt was only used in new cars – but not anymore! It’s now also available for you in the aftermarket.

Designed for the toughest tasks: Our BSG belt

The belt for belt starter generators is constantly exposed to a great amount of stress. Frequent load direction changes under high loads and tractive forces are real challenges: The multi V-belt must be able to withstand up to 2,000 Newton. To achieve and maintain this top performance, we developed a particularly resistant material mix: It’s a patented cover fabric of cotton and polyamide which makes the belt tough and durable on the ribbed side. The belt itself consists of a reinforced elastomeric compound with a high fiber content. This enables it to withstand the high belt starter generator demands for a long time – and this contributes to lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions.

So what IS a belt starter generator?

In many hybrid vehicles, these compact power packs consisting of an electric motor, 48V battery and voltage converter replace the starter and alternator – and this significantly increases the vehicle’s efficiency. The idea behind this is that the combustion engine should only be used when it’s really needed.

  • If the driver takes his foot off the gas pedal while driving, the BSG makes sure that the engine takes a break – and that the vehicle continues to move at a constant speed.
  • When braking, the BSG charges its own battery with electricity generated by the braking force. The combustion engine switches off – and the BSG’s own battery continues to supply the on-board power supply system with its generated electricity.
  • The BSG also supports the combustion engine when much more engine power is needed, e.g. during acceleration or when driving uphill.
  • The engine starts faster and more quietly, making things much more comfortable for driver and passengers.
