History of Crypton

Founded in 1890 under the name Newton, the company initially manufactured electric motors and generators. By the 1920s, it had expanded into the development of testing equipment for the motor industry.


Key Historical Milestones
1920s: Lancashire Dynamo and Motor Co purchased the business to expand their garage equipment interests.

1932: Lancashire Dynamo and Crypto was formed by the amalgamation of Lancashire Dynamo and Motor Co and Crypto Electrical Co.

1936: Crypton Equipment Ltd was formed by Lancashire Dynamo and Crypto to handle their battery charging, cinema, and rectifier business.

1967: Thorn Electrical Industries became the new owner through its acquisition of Metal Industries.

1968: Crypton Triangle was formed when Thorn acquired Triangle of Hyde and amalgamated it with Crypton Equipment.

1970: Tube Investments (TI Crypton) purchased the business from Crypton Triangle.

1985: FKI, previously known as Fisher Karpark Industries Ltd., acquired the TI Group.

1994: Wellman Transport and Technology Group purchased Crypton Technology Group.

1998: Crypton Ltd was created as part of a management buyout.

2001: Dieseltune and Wheelforce joined Crypton, forming one of Europe’s largest independently owned automotive equipment manufacturers.  

2003: Autodiagnos joined Crypton, adding diagnostic tools for automotive electronic systems.

2007: Omitec Group became the new owner of Crypton, Dieseltune, Wheelforce & Autodiagnos.

2012: Continental of Germany acquired the Omitec group, including Crypton.

2025: Crypton becomes a brand of Aumovio.

Over more than a century, Crypton has built a strong reputation for innovation and leadership in engine diagnostics, emissions testing, and automotive garage equipment. From its early days producing electric motors to its current role as a respected name in emissions and garage equipment, Crypton’s story is one of continual progress, technical expertise, and adaptation to the changing needs of the automotive industry.
